Post Surgical CPM
American Medical Devices, Inc., is a supplier of durable medical equipment including the LPM 100™ Lumbar Passive Motion Device used by physicians as an adjunct to patient care for chronic, acute and post-surgical back patients.
The LPM 100™ was developed in 1990 and has been provided to thousands of patients for in home use. Physicians provide prescriptions for the use of the device and its protocols, upon precertification through the insurance carrier, the device will be supplied to the patient for in home use.
Two studies (1) have been conducted in conjunction with American Medical Devices, Inc., both demonstrate the efficacy of the LPM 100™ for in home use. The first study was completed in October 1995, by Robert Mumby, MD, Jonathan Greenberg, MD, JD, FACS and Jose Sepulvada, PhD, MPH, PE. The study showed very favorable results from the device toward patient recovery when used with established protocols. The study results were presented in Vancouver, Canada to the North American Spine Society in October 1996.
A second retrospective study was completed in 1995 by Gilbert Meadows, MD. The results again were recorded as favorable to the patients’ recovery when implemented along with established protocol.
(1) Copies of these studies are available upon request to qualified medical professionals as well as a list of physicians who have utilized the device.
Description and Use of the Device
The LPM 100™ can be used with the patient in the prone, supine, or in some cases, where scoliosis is involved, on the side. Each end of the device is adjustable in 2.5" increments, or one end of the device can be fixed in a stationary position. The total range of motion can be adjusted to a maximum of 30" extension and 90" flexion; the device has over 500 variable settings between 0" and the maximum settings. The center portion of the device is stationary and does not move. For safety purposes, the patient controls the motion of the device with a hand held on/off switch.
A variable speed control is provided to give a minimum of 2 cycles per minute and a maximum of 15 cycles per minute based on patient tolerance. Typically a patient will use the device for 15 minutes four times per day based upon tolerance, physician protocol and instruction. Each device is equipped with a pressure sensitive compliance meter to monitor patient adherence with protocols and physician orders.
The LPM 100™ is an attractively upholstered device that can easily be moved into a patient’s home. It fits through standard doorways and can be moved about on locking casters. Its floor height was designed for easy on and off mounting by the patient. A washable sheepskin is provided for each patient to place on the device for added comfort and cleanliness.
This device is used for both acute and chronic patients in an attempt to prevent surgical intervention. In some cases, this mode of treatment has allowed patients to avoid surgery. If surgery is indicated and performed, patients utilize the LPM 100™ immediately after surgery upon arrival at home, generally for a period of 4 to 8 weeks. Prescriptions can be extended by the physician if indicated.
Physician’s Information
The LPM 100™ is placed in a patient’s home for a period of 4 to 8 weeks by physician prescription in accordance with protocols. A Certified Rehab Technician visits the patient weekly and is on call 24 hours per day and 7 days per week to service the LPM 100™ or address the needs of the patient as it relates to the device. Each week the LPM 100™ is adjusted to increase range of motion according to protocol and patient tolerance. Progress reports, standard pain charts and Certified Rehab Technician comments and observations are delivered to the physician weekly. The LPM 100™ is equipped with pressure sensitive compliance indicators which monitor patient adherence with protocols and physician instructions.
The clinical indication for LPM 100™ usage encompasses a specific treatment plan. The plans are designed to benefit a variety of spinal injury cases. The LPM 100™ is supplied for the treatment of acute and chronic back pain as an adjunct therapy prior to surgery. If surgery cannot be avoided the device can be prescribed immediately post operatively to enhance the healing of soft tissue following laminectomies, discectomies, percutaneous discectomies, fusions with or without instrumentation - including bilateral, unilateral, PLIFS, ALIFS, Global or 360 degree Fusions.
