Chronic Constant Passive Motion
The Lumbar Passive Motion Device from American Medical Devices, Inc., was designed around accepted clinical studies indicating the healing of soft tissue structures and using gentle controlled linear motion enhances reduction in pain. Lumbar CPM facilitates recovery from acute and chronic injuries, low back pain, as well as, leg pain and sciatica.
The unit is used in your home for a specified period of time as prescribed by the ordering physician (usually 8 to 12 weeks). Equipment adjustments are made as needed to provide incremental changes in flexion, while cycle speed is adjustable according to patient tolerance. The patient controls the starting and stopping of the unit with a hand-held on/off switch. The device is mounted on lockable castors for easy mobility and stationary placement. Most insurances pay 100% of the cost for the rental of the Lumbar CPM.
Application
For a patient with back injuries, motion is applied at the upper range of restricted motion and periodically increased within the limits of the patient's tolerance. By increasing the range of motion and decreasing pain in the spine, patients are able to heal more quickly.
By introducing continuous passive motion, scar tissue will heal in a normal striated manner thus eliminating the conglomerated scarring and related pain caused by the injury. Use of the Lumbar CPM also allows range of motion, mobility, and flexibility to return.
Clinical Advantages
By providing gentle, repetitive, motion increases, to the affected spine, soft tissue adhesions and scar tissue will be minimized and pain decreased. Active motion is often painful thus, sometimes avoided by the patient. Passive motion allows the patient to receive the desired amount of movement with minimal pain and no active effort. The need for over the counter medication can often be reduced or eliminated.
Indications
- Acute/Chronic low back injuries.
- Chronic deconditioned spines
- Acute/Chronic low back pain
- Acute/Chronic leg pain

Description of the Lumbar CPM:
The unit is about 2ft by 5.5ft and is 30in high. It rolls on casters and is designed to easily roll through doorways. It is attractively upholstered and is comfortable to get on and off. It has a patient controlled start/stop switch and a dial by which the patient controls the speed of the unit. The unit, if approved by your insurance, is delivered to your home.
